Since Christmas and my bday
Since Christmas and my bday are both coming up, and because there’s no guarantee I’ll make it to either again, I decided to buy myself a combo gift for both. I’ve had a Panasonic Lumix micro 4/3 camera for years, but even though I like it a lot I’ve never really done much with it, mostly because of the kit lens (a 14-42mm zoom) it came with, which is almost as big as the camera, and has a slow f/stop (f/3.5 maximum, and that shrinks quickly to f5.6 when you zoom any), so it was too cumbersome to operate. I wanted to get a more compact and faster lens for it, even if it was fixed length, but they’re all around $300 at least – and that’s more than I wanted to spend for a ‘fun’ camera.
But I was checking Amazon a few weeks ago, and they’re selling these new Chinese-made lenses; a 25mm f1.8 (50mm equivalent on 35mm cameras), and 35mm f/1.7 (70mm equivalent) for $63 and $90, so I decided for that price I might as well give them a try.
It took about 3 weeks for the 25mm to get here, as it’s shipped on an actual slow boat from China, but the 35mm shipped from the US and got here in just a few days. They’re both pretty nicely made of all-metal construction (no plastic at all! Machined aluminum barrels with a copper core, according to the specs) and real multi-coated glass (again no plastic!)! Of course they’re completely manual with no auto focus or auto exposure, but that’s what I’m used to, so it doesn’t bother me at all. I’m just glad I can now carry the camera around easily, and have a choice of lens lengths if I want them. And it’s nice to have that ‘old skool’ rangefinder camera look and feel, and the ease and convenience of digital. Fuq you film, I’m done with you.
I’ll be going around testing them out as soon as I have the chance, will update. Merry Shitscram and Happy Bday to me!
